When you hire movers, you are hiring people to come into your home or office and handle some of your most important (and expensive) things. Remove as much stress as you can by doing your homework before selecting a moving company. The following questions will show you what to look for, and what to avoid during your next move.
Look to see that the company is registered with both the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Texas Department of Transportation.
Practice makes perfect, or so the saying goes. It is often true that a moving company with more experience will be more efficient with the job. Although there are possibly brand-new moving companies worth the price out there, it comes down to the people with whom you would rather trust your belongings: seasoned professionals or eager amateurs?
Ask the moving company for a written quote, and be sure that you understand what you get for your money. Are there any other fees that will arise during the move? Do they have charges associated with installing appliances? What methods of payment are accepted?
Ask detailed questions about the moving company’s insurance. Most moving companies have insurance based on weight, so you’ll want to have an idea of the value of your belongings in relation to its weight and what the mover will provide. Some moving companies will sell additional moving insurance, but check with your own insurance company first to see if you’re covered through any of your own policies.
If you opt to have your belongings packed for you, find out how they’ll be packed and labeled. During the move keep an accurate list of the number of boxes in each room, as well as the odds and ends that are difficult or too big to pack.
If the company is established and reliable they should have letters from satisfied customers. While you’re checking up on them, call the Better Business Bureau to find out if there have been any complaints about the company.
Although this is not necessarily a requirement, it does help boost your local economy to hire a locally owned and operated company. Do your part to help keep Austin weird (and thriving) by checking out Minor Moving for all your moving needs.
This list won’t automatically ensure that a particular moving company will be the right one for you, but it will narrow the search to companies that are honest, ethical, and get the job done. Who doesn’t want movers like that?
